A little about Geoffry Chaucer:

Geoffry Chaucer was an English poet. His last name Chaucer is derived from a French form of the Latin word calcearius. His father's name was John. Geoffry's father and grandfather were vintners. His family was of a high mechent class, and had dealings with royals before. This is why Geoffry had such diffrent view points of life.

With the viewpoints that he was given he could work with the royals. And so he became a valet of the kings chamber, after Edward the 3rd payed for Geoffry's ransom, when he was taken prisoner in the Hundred Years War. Goffrys job consisted of making royal beds, carrying messages, and holding torches. Later he became a Squire for the royals.
